Abstract

Nancy Hershoff, Head of Bibliographic Control/Special Projects Officer, Florida International University; Daniel Cromwell, LMS Field Specialist, Technical Services, Florida Center for Library Automation (FCLA).

In April 2008, the Biscayne Bay Library of Florida International University was faced with a seemingly insurmountable government documents disposition project, which involved the suppression of 19,700 bibliographic records, 112,482 holdings records, 88,731 item records, the compilation of approximately 120 disposition lists (200 entries per list), and the symbol deletion from 96,482 OCLC records. The proposed presentation will describe how this project was explored, planned, and implemented with record speed, relative ease, and substantial savings by utilizing various search features, global changes, services, and reports in Aleph V.18 environment. The presenters will share their experience and knowledge gained from this project with attendees in the hope that automation will continue to assist other librarians in similar projects.
