        <dc:creator>Corrado, Edward M.</dc:creator>
        <dc:subject>Voyager</dc:subject>
        <dc:description>Do you want spell checking in your WebVoyage OPAC? How about RSS feeds? Maybe del.icio.us tagging? Edward M. Corrado, a veteran Voyager administrator, will discuss various modifications and additions that Systems Librarians around the world have made to WebVoyage. Besides spell checking and RSS feeds, Edward will discuss adding persistent links to bibliographic records, integrating Amazon.com book covers and reviews, searching WebVoyage from the Firefox Web browser search box, WebVoyage wrapper scripts and more. Each of these hacks will be given an overview with instructions on where to get more information. Towards the end of the session, time permitting, session attendees will be asked to share there own experience in adding functionality to WebVoyage. Based on a presentation delivered at the 2nd International Group of ex Libris Users (IGeLU) Conference on 4 September 2007 in Brno, Czech Republic.</dc:description>

        <dc:creator>Corrado, Edward M.</dc:creator>
        <dc:subject>General Topics</dc:subject>
        <dc:description>Open source, open standards, open access, and other open movements have been gathering increased attention in the library world. These movements provide numerous possibilities, opportunities, and, yes, challenges for libraries. Special attention will be placed on the open source software movement and why the freedoms offered by Open Source are important to everyone (even commercial ILS vendors!). The benefits of these freedoms transcend the programmers and other people who actively support this movement by advocating, implementing, and/or developing open source software. The presenter will provide an overview of some of these movements and discuss their implications for libraries, now and into the future.</dc:description>

        <dc:description>In this presentation Edward Corrado and Jim Robertson will discuss social software and what implications it has for libraries. Clay Shirky, who is largely credited with creating the term defines social software as software that supports group interaction. Some examples of social software include instant messaging, RSS, blogs, wikis, folksonomies (tagging), photo sharing, social bookmarking, and more. The presentation will start with an overview of some of these social software technologies and there applications in libraries will be provided. After the overview Corrado and Robertson will discuss the current and future implications of social software for librarians, library systems, and libraries in general.</dc:description>

This session will provide a discussion of special jobs we have created to manipulate Aleph data. Some examples include monitoring changes in item processing status to detect materials ready for exporting new holdings to OCLC and tracking how long it takes materials to go through technical processing. A discussion of the steps involved and how to approach the challenge creatively will be part of the presentation.</dc:description>

We support the unix hardware used in with the Digital Library of Georgia (DLG), Media Archives and Peabody Collection, and the Russell Political Research Library. All of these departments have one or more digitization projects going on. The DLG has been digitizing images for years, and has, for year and a half, started digitizing newspapers from our Georgia Newspapers microfilm collection. The Media department has a video digitization project ongoing. It is our job to come up with the best way to store and preserve these collections with increasingly fewer fiscal resources. This session will describe our efforts on this score, and briefly will also go into some of the different architectures available, such as SAN, NAS, ZFS, HSM, and SAM-FS. I also will take a brief look at a few of the many companies offering storage solutions. </dc:description>

        <dc:description>FCLA supports a centrally managed ALEPH installation for eleven public universities in Florida. Running all dataloads through the ALEPH batch loaders would be a scheduling and support challenge. In conjunction with library staff, FCLA developed a flexible dataload client for use by FCLA and, more importantly, library staff. This session will include a demonstration of the client and a discussion of the design and training considerations involved in its development and deployment.&#13;

        <dc:description>Duke University implemented ALEPH, MetaLib, and SFX over a thirteen-month schedule from start to STP. The implementation required integration of these systems with other campus systems including SAP R/3, LDAP, offsite storage (GFA), student systems (PeopleSoft), and the campus portal (uPortal). This presentation will describe the implementation process and highlight the positive and negative aspects of bringing up three Ex Libris systems within a thirteen-month time frame.&#13;

Instead of creating “cron” jobs, SUNY Stony Brook implemented a homegrown shell script based on the calendar date for bimonthly, monthly, and atypical tasks. The script itself is scheduled to run daily using the ALEPH joblist. Come share the code.&#13;

        <dc:description>The sixteen institutions of the University System of Maryland and Affiliated Institutions (USMAI) consortium have been sharing a variety of resources for over 15 years. The ALEPH Patron Placed Holds (PPH) function developed for the USMAI is the linchpin from which our unique collaborative spirit and many of our resource sharing practices have evolved. By using the Request feature of the web PAC, eligible students, faculty and staff can borrow monographs located in any USMAI library by placing electronic requests to have the items sent to the pick-up library of their choice where they are charged out as easily as any item in the pick-up site’s own collection. This collaborative program significantly enhances the print resources available to USMAI.&#13;

        <dc:title>Routine Server-based Bulk Notice Generation: Notes on the Gory Details&#13;

        <dc:creator>Corrigan, Peter</dc:creator>
        <dc:subject>Meeting Minutes</dc:subject>
        <dc:subject>Aleph</dc:subject>
        <dc:description>A simplified approach to routine bulk-notice generation, without recourse to the Task Manager, is described. A locally developed server-based application embeds an XSLT processor, thus exploiting existing style sheets. Notice branding is facilitated without requiring knowledge of XSLT using arbitrary HTML headers and footers. By utilizing MIME subtype Multipart/alternative, Email attachments are avoided.&#13;
&#13;
Audience: ALEPH system administrators, circulation back-office staff&#13;
&#13;
Version: 15 and above&#13;
&#13;
Educational outcome: This poster session seeks to educate about the customization potential inherent in ALEPH's multi-tiered printing architecture. The session may stimulate others as to the wonderful opportunities made possible by this architecture. </dc:description>

        <dc:description>It's a question we all ask when purchasing a new ILS. And although the functionality may not be completely built in to ALEPH, it is possible to set up communications to and from other campus systems such as SAP. Come see the data feeds MIT has set up for billing fines, paying invoices, and loading patrons.&#13;
&#13;
Audience: Implementation would be at the systems level, but circulation and acquisitions staff may be interested in the possibilities.&#13;

        <dc:description> EDI is a simple concept. A successful EDI transaction is the result of a cooperative venture by systems librarians, library staff familiar with acquisitions and serials processing and support from the vendors. This program will provide a sequence of steps designed to answer the question raised by the title of the program.&#13;
&#13;
Audience: Library staff with an interest in improving efficiency, modifying workflow, and managing resources more effectively and system administrators who are interested in implementing or writing their own loader program for EDI serials invoicing&#13;

        <dc:title>MARSC21 Holdings Records Workshop</dc:title>
        <dc:creator>Hatch, Patricia</dc:creator>
        <dc:subject>Aleph</dc:subject>
        <dc:description>As ALEPH customers upgrade to versions 15 and higher, many libraries will be using all of the MARC21 Holdings Standard fields for the first time. While most serials librarians/catalogers are familiar with some of the fields (such as the 853-855 fields), many are unfamiliar with other parts of the format, such as the fixed fields (LDR and 008 fields) and other holdings fields (such as the 863-865 fields, indicators and subfield values). The purpose of this workshop is to introduce or reintroduce NAAUG librarians to the MARC21 Holdings Format and demonstrate how it can be used in ALEPH Version 16.&#13;
&#13;
Topics Presented:&#13;
&#13;
    * MARC21 Holdings Format:&#13;
    * The Leader and 008 fields&#13;
    * The 852, Location and access field, subfields and indicators&#13;
    * The 853-855 fields, review of subfields and discussion of indicator values and subfield 8 values&#13;
    * The 863-865 fields, indicator values, subfield values, recording of published and non-published gaps&#13;
    * 866-868 fields, indicators and subfield 8 values&#13;
    * Public display of holdings data&#13;
    * ALEPH 16 options for creating a predicted set of issues&#13;
&#13;
Audience: Catalogers and serials staff who will be adding detailed holdings information to ther holdings records.&#13;

        <dc:description>Portable scanners are versatile, and can speed up many routine jobs, from inventory work to adding repetitive notes to barcoding. They can be especially handy for large systems with centralized processing. However, setting them up isn't necessarily an intuitive process, but it's definitely a collaborative one. The University of Iowa 's experience getting a portable scanner up and running had many twists and frustrations before the scanner was operational. Chief among these were getting information into the scanner and back out in a useful manner and interfacing the scanner with Note Pad and Excel.&#13;

Audience: Circulation, technical services&#13;

        <dc:description>This presentation will be about how we loaded the full 2004 MeSH file (including subdivision records) in ALEPH, the indexing decisions we made, and the work involved in updating our local MeSH authority file and associated bibliographic records. Topics to be covered include: reviewing obsolete MeSH authorities, changed MeSH authorities, partial match MeSH Headings, and unmatched MeSH Headings (including those coded as 600s and 610s). I will also cover how we dealt with problems first created in 1999 when NLM changed many of its subdivision practices. Finally, ways of validating MeSH headings and subdivisions during cataloguing will be reviewed.&#13;
&#13;
Audience: Cataloguers and those responsible for record loading and indexing tables&#13;

        <dc:description>McGill has just introduced a “new titles” sub-catalogue and index for its OPAC. The index is based on an “accession date” stored in the item record, and the sub-base contains the books (and book-like items) that have recently become available on library shelves across the McGill Libraries system. The presentation describes the new OPAC features and explains how we made it all possible with PL/SQL.&#13;
&#13;
Audience: Public services and systems librarians; a high level of expertise required for the systems stuff, a low level for the overview.&#13;
&#13;
Version: 14.2 (not very relevant)&#13;

        <dc:title>Upgrading a Consortium to v. 16.02</dc:title>
        <dc:creator>Schmidt, Ronald M.</dc:creator>
        <dc:subject>Aleph</dc:subject>
        <dc:description>The Hochschulbibliothekszentrum serves a consortium of 100+ libraries in two federal states in Germany . Our upgrade from ALEPH V. 13 to V 16.x omitted V. 14 all together, thus stepping into data migration to Unicode format, redesigning the structures of the database, importing and exporting huge amounts of data, reindexing and presenting them to the connected local library systems (ALEPH and non-ALEPH). This paper reports on the decisions made before setting up the hardware, a brief project survey, and experiences with production parameters.&#13;

Audience: Systems administrators, systems librarians, library managers&#13;

        <dc:creator>Stephens, Owen</dc:creator>
        <dc:subject>Aleph</dc:subject>
        <dc:description>This session will outline what the ALEPH X-Server is and how it is being exploited at Royal Holloway. Using simple Perl and XSLT, I will demonstrate possible uses of the X-Server, including: Search interfaces; Reading lists; Authentication; Embedding ALEPH search results into a web page; Displaying user account details.&#13;
&#13;
Audience: Library systems staff; other staff may be interested in the examples of how we exploit the X-Server. The demonstrations are intended for any level of expertise, but the detail of how they are achieved will require some understanding of xml, xslt and Perl (or similar scripting languages).&#13;
&#13;
Version: 14.2 and above, with X-Server available&#13;
&#13;
Educational outcome: Participants should be aware of how to find out if they have the X-Server installed, licensed and running. Participants should understand the functions available via the X-Server. Participants will see how the X-Server functions can be used in a service environment.</dc:description>
