Abstract
This presentation will describe how UMass Amherst Libraries used JQuery, PHP, Perl, and the Aleph X-server to create a virtual shelf browse. With UMass planning to move a significant portion of their print collection to remote shelving in the next decade, the Libraries wanted to ensure students and faculty would have a way to virtually browse these off-site materials. This presentation will describe how we built the backend technology and how we designed and developed the user interface, in order to re-create the serendipity of browsing the stacks.
